In October, we spent some intense yet inspiring days at the Harzkristall glassworks. For Nabo’s new series of three-dimensional sculptures, we needed not only high-performance melting furnaces but also the expertise of experienced glassmakers – and it was precisely this collaboration that made our stay so special. Together with the master glassmaker René, Nabo was able to bring his latest designs to life in glass, step by step. A few years ago, Nabo began a series entitled ‘Liberation’, which he now intends to revisit. It consists of steel cables woven into baskets, into which glass is blown.
From the moment the glass sphere was first blown to the final shaping, it was a process requiring intense concentration and precision, underpinned by a deep mutual trust. Witnessing how artistic vision and masterful craftsmanship complemented one another at every stage of the process was both impressive and inspiring.
We were in the Harz Mountains as a team, and Nabo’s daughter, Lisa Violetta, filmed the entire creative process. Together, we look back on an intense, instructive and moving time. Every day was so full of new experiences that we would fall into bed in the evenings, exhausted but happy. The best moment, however, was that in the end we were able to return home with a series of new, extraordinary sculptures – works that are not only the result of hard work, but also embody the special energy of this stay.
